The 10 Biggest Scandals in the History of Oscars

The Academy Awards ceremony is arguably one of if not the most prestigious and widely viewed events in Hollywood, and this year witnessed a huge best film mix-up. But you will soon forget it after checking out these 10 scandals.

1. Jolie Swaps Spit With Her Brother
Before she became known for her humanitarian efforts, Angelina Jolie was considered
something of a wild child in Hollywood, and sharing a passionate embrace with her brother at the 2000 Oscars certainly did nothing to help that perception. Another thing that didn’t help was when, in the first few seconds of her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress, Jolie announced to the crowd that she was “so in love” with her brother. “I’m in shock,” Jolie said after taking the microphone. “And I’m so in love with my brother right now,” she added, letting out a titter of nervous laughter. "He just held me and said he loved me." Whatever else Jolie may have said in that speech, that was pretty much the only thing that anyone talked about or remembered.

2. Cher and Her Headdress Make a Splash
Cher always knows how to make a statement, so when her very serious performance in Mask was overlooked by the Academy, she took to the red carpet in an outfit that ensured she could not be overlooked again. She wore a jaw-dropping black beaded outfit with matching feather headpiece, created by her frequent design collaborator Bob Mackie. When asked about her outré ensemble, she famously said, "As you can see, I did receive my Academy booklet on how to dress like a serious actress." She's not only a fashion icon, but a shade icon, too.

3. A Naked Man Streaked across the Stage
The Streaker “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings.” That’s what actor David Niven said in 1974 after a naked man streaked across the stage at the Oscars just as he was about to present an award. The Brit never lost his cool or batted an eyelid while the audience roared with laughter.

4. Adrien Brody Made out with Halle Berry
At the 2003 Oscars, Halle Berry presented the award for best actor to Adrien Brody for his work in "The Pianist." He was so excited to win for his first nomination (and to be the youngest to win in this category) that he gave Halle Berry a passionate kiss before starting his acceptance speech.

5. Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Appear In The Same Auditorium
Given the gossip that has surrounded Aniston, Pitt and Jolie since the former two ended their marriage and the latter two started their relationship, it was inevitable that the first time they were in the same building together with a bunch of photographers would make waves. And yet, Aniston’s turn as an Oscar presenter in the year that Pitt was nominated for his work in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Jolie was nominated for her work in Changeling was more notable for how newsworthy it wasn’t than anything that actually happened. Apparently, three people who work in the same industry can actually behave like adults at a work event! Who knew?

6. Jennifer Lawrence's Fall
At the 2013 Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence got her first win for best actress for “Silver Linings Playbook." Dressed in a white and wide Dior gown, she tripped on her way up to the stage. In an act of notable chivalry, Hugh Jackman popped up from his seat to assist her, as did the presenter, best actor winner Jean Dujardin ("The Artist"). When she got a standing ovation, Lawrence joked that people were only doing it because they felt bad that she fell.

7. Jennifer Lawrence Fell, Again
Oops, you did it again! The Best Supporting Actress nominee showed up to the Oscars Sunday night, March 2, in a strapless red Dior gown and managed to trip and fall within minutes of stepping out on the red carpet.

8. The Curious Case of Adele Dazeem
Perhaps John Travolta had slept through the Frozen fever that had swept the country in the months leading up the 2014 Oscars, but he sure didn’t know who Idina Menzel was. While attempting to summon Menzel to the stage, he jumbled her name’s vowels and consonants in a truly unforgettable way. Somehow, Idina Menzel became Adele Dazeem.

9. Dakota Johnson Snapped at Her Mother
When Spencer asked Griffith whether she had seen the R-rated "Fifty Shades of Grey," Griffith responded that she had not. Griffith then assured she had no desire to watch her daughter in action in the steamy film. To an apparent point of contention between the two, Johnson added: "All right! You don't have to see it. Jeez. I'm like, 'You can see it,' and you're just like, 'No.'"

10. The Best Picture Mix-up
The biggest Oscar screw up of all time happened at the 89th Annual Academy Awards, when La La Land was mistakenly announced as Best Picture winner before the error was uncovered and Moonlight emerged as the victor.
